What is Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual Reality
VR
Virtual Reality or for short VR is heard everywhere in todays society, but do we all really know what VR means? This is a question many of us have asked ourselves. Virtual Reality has been around for many years, but has only started to become very popular. The way I explain it is that Virtual Reality (VR) means being immersed into a game like feel and then being tracked in real time. Even though the visual is created via a program, the experience is something we all love. VR is about having fun overall, but this doesn't stop programmers using VR for good.

In technical terms VR according to Virtual Reality is very straight foward. They explain that Virtual Reality is a term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer generated environment that can be explored and interacted by a person. The person then becomes part of this virtual world or immersed in the environment, and can perform actions and minipulate objects while there. The user is getting the feel of being in a different world / environment but can always come back to reality when suits. I believe VR is an experience that we must all try. Virtual Reality plays on our sense organs to give us the best experience possible. Virtual Reality states that Virtual Reality entails presenting our senses with a computer generated virtual environment that we can all explore in some fashion.

VR Headset

How does Virtual Reality work, you might be wondering? There are many ways that Virtual Reality can be achieved. Virtual Reality is achieved by wearing head gear like headsets that you're phone can connect to. Samsung has really taken this to be an advantage, they release some of the most up to date Virtual Reality head gear that work hand in hand with there Samsung phones. Other ways Virtual Reality can be achieved is by hand grips, special senser gloves and omni-directional treadmills according to Virtual Reality. The way to get a good sense of presesnce from Vitual Reality is if you get a good combination of hardware, software and sensory synchronicity. The experience you get for VR is like nothing before.

VR is used in today's society for more than one thing. Entertainment is one of the biggest uses of VR and this shows how fun VR can be. VR is used mainly in immersive films and Video Games to which the consumer can easilly access. Many game consoles are now releasing VR enhanced games and gear. Other areas that VR are becoming popular in are Architecture, Medicine, Sports, The Arts and much more. Adding new ways VR can be used will change the market for users and creators.

According to Irish Times over 50% of US teenagers feel addicated to thier phones, and Four in 10 from the UK are addicated to the internet. Even though these numbers aren't related to the Irish market, every young person can't go anywhere without thier phones or by being conected to the internet, so will it change is VR becomes a goble want? I found that Four in 10 are addicated to the internet as a shock. It just shows how much we rely on the internet to hide, look for entertainment and much more.

This is a chart showing the user increase for VR from 2014 - 2018. This is the website Statistics.
VR Stats

It shows incredibly how worldwide the numbers have increased so much just within four years.

VR

VR is now becoming a crave by many gamers, creators and the usual consumer, but one worry that sparks is will we become addicated to VR as we are to Mobile Devices, Games, Streaming and much more? Even though VR makes the experience of a game, film or daily task more fun, could it become something we rely on?

Here is an article I found on VR that is worth a read!

Comments

  1. I heard about VR being used for veterans dealing with ptsd. With how immersive VR is becoming, perhaps it could become a part of our daily lives! Humanity could even use it for shopping in virtual supermarkets and having meetings 'in person' in a business setting.
